Wellington Street Development
This is a design project for a boutique hotel in a narrow site near Lan Kwai Fong, an area famed for its party atmosphere. The design team took the liberty of designing a building for which conventional architectural language in hotel design was no longer a consideration. Taking the inspiration from the name of the hotel, ‘The Lantern’, the design reinterpreted the form of an old vernacular style of Chinese bamboo lantern.
The curved façade with textured and shaped tiles comprised an external cladding reminiscent of woven bamboo. The columns were pushed to the perimeter to give free space to the guest rooms. The tubular form and the interlaced façade was an endeavour to break away from the monotony of the regimental building blocks of the area, injecting fun into the city fabric, apt for the place where it is located.
